Beautiful Taiwan is China's island treasure. On the island

There is a moving legend about the Sun Moon Lake. Long ago, they say, in the

…there were two poisonous dragons in it. They often came out to harm people and were very

…dreadful. One day they swallowed both the sun and the moon

dǔ肚zi子lǐ里cóng从cǐ此rén人men们shēng生huó活zài在hēi黑àn暗zhōng中。yǒu有yī一

…into their bellies, and from then on people lived in darkness. There was a

…a young couple, the man called Dajian and the woman Shuishe,

They did not fear the dragons and resolved to rid the people of them. They heard

yǒu有liǎng两jiàn件bǎo宝wù物mái埋zài在ā阿lǐ里shān山xià下，yī一jiàn件shì是jīn金fǔ斧tóu头，

…two treasures were buried beneath Mount Ali, one a gold axe,

yī一jiàn件shì是jīn金jiǎn剪dāo刀，yòng用tā它men们kě可yǐ以zhì制fú服dú毒lóng龙。yú于

…one a pair of gold shears, with which the dragons could be subdued. So

shì是tā他men们jiù就rì日yè夜wā挖shān山，lì历jìn尽qiān千xīn辛wàn万kǔ苦，kè克fú服

…so they dug into the mountain day and night, enduring every hardship and overcoming

zhǒng种zhǒng种kùn困nán难，zhōng终yú于wā挖chū出le了jīn金fǔ斧tóu头hé和jīn金jiǎn剪dāo刀。

…every difficulty, and at last dug out the gold axe and the gold shears.

With these two treasures they subdued the dragons and won

shèng胜lì利。dú毒lóng龙bǎ把tài太yáng阳hé和yuè月liàng亮tǔ吐le了chū出lái来。cóng从cǐ此

…victory. The dragons spat out the sun and the moon. From then on

rén人men们yòu又yǒu有le了guāng光míng明。wèi为le了bù不ràng让dú毒lóng龙zài再lái来hài害rén人，

…people had light again. So that the dragons could harm no one again,

tā他men们tiān天tiān天shǒu守zài在rì日yuè月tán潭biān边，yì一zhí直shǒu守le了hǎo好duō多nián年。

…they kept watch by the Sun Moon Lake every day, for many years.

In the end the two of them turned into two mountains, which are the Sun Moon

The Cowherd and the Weaving Maid

cóng从qián前，yǒu有gè个xiǎo小huǒ伙zi子，tā他fù父mǔ母hěn很zǎo早jiù就qù去shì世le了，gē哥gē哥gěi给le了tā他

Once there was a young man whose parents had died early, and his elder brother gave him

yī一tóu头lǎo老niú牛。tā他bái白tiān天shàng上shān山gàn干huó活ér儿，wǎn晚shàng上jiù就hé和lǎo老niú牛zhù住zài在yì一qǐ起，yú于

…an old ox. By day he worked on the hill and at night he lived with the ox, so

shì是rén人men们dōu都jiào叫tā他niú牛láng郎

…so people called him the Cowherd

niú牛láng郎bù不dàn但qín勤láo劳，néng能chī吃kǔ苦，ér而qiě且wéi为rén人chéng诚shí实，xīn心yǎn眼ér儿yě也hǎo好。

The Cowherd was not only hardworking and hardy but honest and kind-hearted too.

zhè这xiē些，dōu都bèi被tiān天shàng上de的zhī织nǚ女kàn看jiàn见le了。zhī织nǚ女ài爱shàng上le了niú牛láng郎，jiù就cóng从tiān天shàng上

All this the Weaving Maid saw from heaven. She fell in love with the Cowherd and from heaven

xià下lái来hé和tā他jié结le了hūn婚。hòu后lái来，tā他men们hái还shēng生le了yī一nán男èr二nǚ女，shēng生huó活měi美mǎn满

…came down and married him. Later they had a boy and a girl and lived happily

The Queen Mother in heaven learned of it and was furious. One day, while

…the Cowherd was working on the hill, the Queen Mother sent soldiers to seize the Weaving Maid. The Cowherd

huí回dào到jiā家hòu后zhǎo找bú不dào到zhī织nǚ女，shí十fēn分zháo着jí急，liǎng两gè个hái孩zi子yě也kū哭zhe着yào要zhǎo找mā妈mā妈。

…got home and could not find the Weaving Maid; he was frantic, and the two children cried for their mother.

Just as the Cowherd did not know what to do, the old ox suddenly spoke: "Cowherd, quickly

bǎ把wǒ我shā杀le了，pī披shàng上wǒ我de的pí皮，nǐ你jiù就kě可yǐ以shàng上tiān天qù去zhǎo找zhī织nǚ女le了。”niú牛láng郎

…kill me and put on my hide, and you can go up to heaven to find the Weaving Maid." The Cowherd

liú流zhuó着yǎn眼lèi泪shā杀le了lǎo老niú牛，pī披shàng上niú牛pí皮，dài带shàng上liǎng两gè个hái孩zi子，shàng上tiān天qù去zhǎo找

…in tears killed the old ox, put on its hide, took his two children and went up to heaven to look for

When the Cowherd reached heaven the Queen Mother saw him. She pulled out

…drew the silver pin from her hair, and at once a silver river appeared in the sky, parting the Cowherd and the Weav

nǚ女fēn分kāi开le了。wáng王mǔ母niáng娘niáng娘zhǐ只ràng让tā他men们zài在měi每nián年de的nóng农lì历qī七yuè月chū初qī七jiàn见

…separated them. She let them meet only on the seventh day of the seventh lunar month
